The TA8051P is a bipolar monolithic DC motor controller from TOSHIBA, designed to control DC motors with up to 3 A output current. The system allows bi-directional motor operation and has an active braking function, making it suitable for applications requiring precise motion control.

The controller implements four operating modes: forward rotation, reverse rotation, stop and braking, selectable via two logic inputs DI1 and DI2 (TTL-compatible). An additional ST input allows the circuit to enter stand-by mode, reducing current consumption to less than 100 µA.

The chip has a separate power supply for the logic and power parts, which increases noise immunity and improves the stability of operation in motor applications. Built-in diodes protect the outputs from overvoltages induced by motor electromotive force.

The TA8051P is equipped with an extensive protection system, including:

  • overcurrent protection (ISD) with current limiting mode,
  • thermal protection (TSD),
  • over-voltage protection (VSD).

When the protections are triggered, the outputs enter a high impedance state, protecting both the circuit and the load.

The circuit is available in an HZIP-12 enclosure, suitable for mounting on a heatsink to allow efficient heat dissipation when operating at high currents.
